single moms are eager to go back to school, but the problem is that they do not have the right funds as well as the time to pursue their education. Aside from financial impossibility to return to school, moms struggle to make ends meet for their day to day needs.
A single mother is always faced with the problem of raising ones child on her own and at the same time keeping a tiring yet low-paying job. This is the main reason why moms set aside their dream of getting a degree and pursuing a professional career. But such a problem has been addressed by the present government through their federal educational grants, especially designed for single moms. Now, let us examine how this system works with regards to the necessary expenses.
The things or expenses which must be taken into consideration are: tuition fees; books and other reference materials; childcare expenses. A single mom needs to worry no more as all these expenses are covered by said educational grants.
Another thing to be regarded is the hassle and expenses incurred in going to school as moms would commute, depending on class schedule, from and to her home. This is why other moms hesitate to go back to school. But once again, the problem can be fixed thanks to the advancement of information technology. Moms may now get that college degree within the comforts of their homes as there is what we call online system of education. Said system is not only hassle-free but also an inexpensive way of getting an education.

December 6th, 2009Distance Education Tips
November 29th, 2009With the advent of information technology, more and more people are getting the full benefits from distance learning. In fact, people who were not able to finish their college courses due to some unavoidable circumstances can now get their college degree without having to resign or give up their current job. Distance learning is a new way of acquiring college and even doctorate degrees without having to attend formal schooling. People can get through the subjects needed to get the degree that they want just by getting brochures and learning materials through mail or through electronic methods. Fully completing a distance learning program, however, is not that easy and requires the same dogged determination and persistence, as with any schooling program. Therefore, for people who would like to earn their degree through distance learning easily and without too much hassle, here are some tips to guide you through:
1. Decide And Assess Yourself
- Distance learning is not for everyone who wishes to avail of its services – In many cases, it can provide flexibility and ease of obtaining the much-needed degree – But for some, it could mean boring methods and procedures and wearisome learning – Ideal for those who can study independently in a self-directed manner – Good for those who do not like interacting with a professor
2. Check Your Mailbox Daily, Electronic Or Otherwise
Distance learning is a continuous learning process. This means that the learning materials that you will need and your assignments or projects will be sent through mails, electronically or through snail mail. So it is best if you always check your mailbox every single day or even multiple times per day. There may be instances where missing a single day of checking your mailbox could mean tons of missed projects or work.
3. Flexibility Should Never Be Equaled With Laxness
Getting flexible schedule does not mean that you have to be lax on your studies. Being flexible on your class schedule would mean that it is up to you how or when you will study. Therefore, in order to succeed and finish your degree as soon as possible, it is best that you organize your schedule, those that concern your work, your family (if any), and your class schedule. It is just a matter of time management. Keep in mind that it is best if you will always set a regular time for your study. In this way, you will never have to worry about getting all things mixed up.
4. Find A Quiet Place To Study
Because you will be entirely on your own when getting a degree through distance learning, it is best that you find a quiet place to do your homework or review your lessons. In this way, you will be able to ponder on things that needed more attention without having to worry about any distractions.
5. Reading Is Comprehension, Not Memorizing
When you read, it would be better to understand the text and subject matter thoroughly instead of memorizing them. In distance learning, memorization is a useless technique. What matters most in distance learning is that you understand the subject matter thoroughly and that you can easily grasp the meaning of the text given to you.
6. Improve Your Communication Skills
There are people who are having more difficulty in talking to other people through the microphone or the conference call than speaking in public. They contend that not seeing the other person is more difficult to deal with than talking to them face to face. These people insist that they could not see whether the other person is satisfied with the answers or not. In distance learning, corrections can be made for people who are having difficulty regarding this matter. Just keep in mind to pay attention to the instructions given and to listen attentively. Try to incorporate some, if not all, of these tips and you will surely finish your degree in a breeze. Just remember that distance learning is not an easy alternative of studying or getting a degree. It is just an option for those who do not have time to go to formal school.

3 Good Reasons For Educating Yourself
November 15th, 2009In today’s world, education is everything. In fact, according to the Democratic Leadership Council, college graduates make nearly twice what high school graduates make, so there is an obvious correlation between how much education you have and how much you will make.
Therefore, making more money than your current salary is one important reason why you should really consider returning to school, especially if you don’t have a college degree yet. Making more money means enjoying a better lifestyle, which is what essentially everyone wants.
It may not take you all that long to increase your degree; alumni of the University of Phoenix claim to have completed their Master’s Degrees in about 12-15 months, despite their busy schedules.
There are other reasons besides money why one should consider returning to school, including providing more opportunities for you in your current career. The more education you have, the more you will be recognized as an expert in your field. This can open up more avenues of advancement for you, leading to new opportunities, especially in terms of leadership, such as a manager or even a partner in the company you work for.
There may be a point in your life that you grow tired of the occupation you are in. You dread each day going to work, making it harder and harder for you to be productive. You know you can’t continue in this fashion. This is another good reason to go back to school – to change your career.
With accredited universities providing online courses and branch campuses away from their home campus, it’s much more convenient to get a degree in a new field than it was even 10 years ago.
Some universities provide accelerated courses where you can take a 4-6 hour class once a week, even on Saturday mornings, in order to get through the courses in a shorter amount of time. This can help you get into your new occupation quicker so that you earn a sustained living in your new occupation that much faster.
Another reason why you may want to go back to school is because your current occupation is being phased out, such as data entry, telephone operators, and fax machine operators. Companies are deciding to use cheaper labour from countries like India and China to fill those positions. As a result, you have to consider going into another occupation that will be around for the foreseeable future.
Careers in information technology, nursing, acting, writing, designing, etc. will likely not be outsourced anytime soon because these careers involve either a high level of a specialized skill, your direct physical presence, or both. A career that combines those two elements would be an ideal career for you to consider to ensure that your occupation isn’t outsourced.
Some people, especially those who are retired, decide to go back to school just to gain new knowledge because they enjoy learning or just because they want to challenge themselves. You often hear about 80 and 90-year old individuals gaining their college degrees. It’s not likely they are going back into the work force at that age, but they want to just prove to themselves that they can still learn and demonstrate their knowledge. It helps to make them feel good about themselves and prove that age is not a deterrent to learning new knowledge.
There are many reasons why 40% of today’s college population is 25 years of age and older. Whether it be for monetary reasons, personal knowledge, or a shift in careers, many “non-traditional students” are returning to school in numbers never seen before.
